If you have spent any amount of time in recovery from any addiction, you’ve gotten your fill of cliche recovery quotes and generic inspirational sayings. There is a very good reason for this, that reason being, they work. However, you might be tired of some of those, so here are some new ones!
some people that might surprise you.
“You can get the monkey off your back, but the circus never leaves town.” –Anne Lamott
-I first came across Anne when a family member in another literary career urged me to read Bird by Bird and it quickly became one of my favorite authors. Her writing covers depression, alcoholism and other tough topics people find it hard to verbalize.
“First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.” –Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald
-In case this name isn’t ringing any bells, he is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of all time for his four novels, perhaps most notably, The Great Gatsby. It is noted that Fitzgerald was widely considered a drinker, by today’s standards he would undoubtedly be labeled an alcoholic.
“Habit is habit. And not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs one step at a time.” –Mark Twain
-Known as the Father of American Literature, Samuel Clemens, or as you know him, Mark Twain was also an avid drinker. He did abide by strict rules to prevent himself from becoming a full-blown alcoholic, however, it was not unknown that he could and sometimes did drink through the day.
“Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it.” –J.K. Rowling
– After hitting the ‘overnight’ success many dreams of, Rowling found herself with the same old issues of how to cope; no amount of money and fame can replace healthy coping skills.
Pay no attention to the fact they are all writers; that’s a topic for a later blog discussion. 😉
