Early on in my recovery, I took an admittedly, ill-formed opinion on Mocktails. (As evident by the post, I clearly had no idea what a Mocktail even was.) The opinion was that Mocktails, while tasty, will leave you wishing there was just a zing of alcohol in them -and I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Mocktails are great for anyone who is trying to stay sober and still enjoy a social life! Without feeling like you need to excuse yourself to the kiddie table.
Let’s be perfectly honest, there is nothing wrong then being the only one drinking water, but sometimes, it’s nice to have a really tasty beverage.
Spirit-free menus have become a staple in most restaurants, as the sober scene grows. Quite recently, in fact, I decided to glance at an SF menu and order a really delicious concoction off the top of the list.
Before the drink came to the table, I vacillated how much of this was a good decision. Maybe this would make me want to drink more and ruin a relatively clean run, or maybe I would be fine, but until that yellow fizzy lemonade was in front of me, I didn’t know what I was in for.
I took a small sip.
The world didn’t end. In fact, people are still carrying on.
Still no propensity to drink.
-and that was it.
This big monumental step, in my own mind, had come and gone, and no one even batted an eye. I ordered an alcohol free drink, instead of the usual water, and no mountains shifted or tidal waves ensued; the world didn’t come crashing down around me in one giant desire to drink.
After reflecting back on myself for some time about this, I see how silly it was that I formed such an opinion on something without even having tried it.
Mocktails are probably nothing new in your sobriety world, but they are still somewhat new to me and while I have yet to figure out my favorite go-to mocktails.
Here are a few that I have found!
Picante Watermelon Agua Fria
1 1/2 oz of pineapple juice
1 1/2 oz of watermelon juice
2 slices of jalapeno
For an extra spritz, add 1/2 oz of Sierra Mist
This mocktail is the perfect combination of sweet and spice. Should you choose to ask for the Sierra Mist, it becomes more of a fizz, but still just as tasty.
Spirit Free Tropical Fizz
2 c. mango
1/2 c. strawberry, sliced
1/2 c. orange juice
1 1/2 c. sparkling water
Blend mango, strawberry, and orange juice in a blender until smooth. (Feel free to add a squirt of lime juice to zest it up) When smooth, (turn off blender) and stir in sparkling water by hand.
Safe-Sex On the Beach
3 oz. grapefruit juice
3 oz. cranberry juice
2 oz. peach juice
(Garnish with cherries)
A new take on the classic Sex on the Beach cocktail, but keeping it clean.
